DIY Disaster Using a DIY Surveillance System!
Last month I joined neighborhood watch group near my office on Facebook. I thought sharing my 58,000 hours of security experience in home invasion, burglary, robbery, vandalism and theft prevention would bring incredible value to the group. Boy, was I dead wrong. The administrator of the group, Wally, (who happens to be former security guard for Kmart) believes that security companies, professional installation and professional video/digital monitoring is not needed for a homeowner or business owner.
I found all this out when I decided to reply to a comment by a lady whose car was broken into. She has a DIY Costco surveillance system that comes so highly recommended by the group Administrator. The picture quality was so bad it could have been ET breaking into her car and still no one would be able identify him from the camera footage.
I commented by consoling her and giving her some really great advice on how to improve her home security. Well, our former security guard Wally didn’t like anyone making comments on the page feed that did not glorify his beloved and coveted DIY Costco system. You’d think he worked for Costco!
The Plot Thickens…
I tried to reason with him about home security and technology but his answer for everything was buying a Costco surveillance system and installing it yourself. As other people started reading the feed and commenting, Wally kept making the most asinine comments I had ever heard about security and trying to defend his unintelligent theory and recommendations. He should have just said “I’m way TOO CHEAP to use a professional product with professional installation.”
Now I’m all for r homeowner’s saving money and being a handy guy myself, I once thought I was a DIY plumber when we did a kitchen remodel a couple of years ago . I can tell you it was an engineering disaster of biblical proportions. It was the coming of second flood and the water came from the ceiling, walls… EVERYWHERE I had run copper pipe. If it wasn’t for a professional plumber showing up and fixing the mess I had made, my wife, kids and I would have been staying at the local hotel. Lucky for me, he was a friend and only shook his head a couple of times and said, “What were you thinking? You better not quit your day job!”
Since that time, I have learned that certain things should be left to the experts. Which brings me back to a recommended DIY system that wasn’t even worth the cardboard box it came in. Why someone would recommend something that doesn’t work at the most crucial time (like a break in) is beyond my understanding.
