DIY Med School
A few years back, I started getting horrendous stomach pains and other infuriating symptoms. I won’t go into the gory details on but trust me, I don’t wish it upon anyone. Due to being in such a technological world, I figured I’d take a quick look at Web MD – what was the worst that could happen?
Fast forward 10 minutes later, I was breathing rapidly, sweating, and thoroughly convinced that I was probably dying from some disease that could only be solved by Gregory House and his team of big brains (you know, from the Fox Drama show…House).
A Sigh Of Relief
Well, obviously I didn’t die and if you’d like to know, it was just a very severe case of my body having some intolerance to gluten and eggs. Basically, it just needed a break. Definitely NOT a stomach eating parasite or an inoperable tumor within the depths of my gut. I did, however, get a refresher course in something that we (and I mean EVERYONE) forgets about all too often. That something is the fact that even with as far as it has come, the internet is still not your ultimate resource to get quality and reliable information – OR PRODUCTS (I have plenty of stories if you need further explanation).
The point is that investing in a quality security or surveillance system is much like needing to get your health checked out. Sure, there are some things you can do on your own, like take your temperature or pop some ibuprofen to bring down a fever, but when it comes down to the big, serious stuff, it is best to leave it to the experts (for some great tips, check out our Consumer and Business Guides to Security)
DIY Security Pitfalls
It’s easy to go online, see a camera, and think, “Hey! This is way cheaper than what that company quoted.” However, when you buy that camera online to save some money, it’ll come with some serious unmentioned prices. Ask yourself these questions:
- Did someone come out to review your property and needs to identify which camera is the best option for you?
- Is the company sending out a professional to install and test your new cameras and system?
- Does the company send a professional to teach you how to use the system?
- Will your warranty cover service in the event of system problems? (and we don’t mean having to rip out a faulty camera, send it back and wait for a replacement)
To put it simply – DIY security solutions aren’t for everyone (or everything) and a quality security or surveillance system isn’t something that you should roll the dice on – especially when it comes to the safety of you and all that needs to be protected.
